  1. The Mustek ScanExpress 12000SP (at least with firmware 1.01) has a bug in the firmware
  2. that makes the backtracking fail if the scanning width is less than 170mm
  3. (the backtracking rarely occurs when the resolution is set below 600DPi)

  5. please note that if you have the memory set the buffer as high as possible
  6. I have mine set to 100MByte. then if you need to scan something big at 1200 DPi
  7. change the buffer to 64 Kbytes and put both the temp and destination picture to hdisk.

  9. if you have a IDE harddrive and put the temp buffer there you should try to ALWAYS have the
  10. temp buffer as low as possible (meaning 64 Kbytes) if you get no errors when backtracking occurs keep it
  11. that way otherwise do as I said above.

  13. The reason for why I think this might work is because of mustek's scsi-implementation which seem's to dislike
  14. any other traffic on the scsi bus while it is scanning.

  16. if you want to scan something in that has a width less than 170mm do this to minimize
  17. the amount of memory required at dpi's 600 and up.

  19. If you hanve only a pure scsi system.
  20. (meaning both scanner and harddrive on the same scsi-bus)

  22. 1) put the temp file on harddisk
  23. 2) put the temp buffer size in betascan to something low like 64 kbytes
  24. 3) put the destination file also on the harddisk
  25. 4) increase the frame to 170mm (or full width)
  26. 4b) scan it
  27. 5) load the resulting image into a image processor
  28.     (preferably one that has virtual memory I think that leaves only Art Effect or ImageFX)
  29. 6) Crop the image in the image processor
  30. 6b) use ICS on the resulting image (if you like).

  32. I'll look into some workarounds for the problem but it might not be something that is possible

  35. The bugs in scanexpress 12000SP might have to do with scsi and therefore can't be worked around that
  36. easily... but one can minimize the damage.
